At the present time, several local people are attempting to get Edgar County, Illinois, as a part of the Looking For Lincoln project. Edgar County was once part of the Eighth Judicial Circuit, and Lincoln was here at times from 1842 through 1858. In researching Lincoln in east central Illinois we have used all types of resources, including newspapers, letters, personal stories, and books. There are three books that are very helpful in our research. All three books deal with Lincoln either prior to moving to Illinois or while he was riding the circuit. All three books were written by authors who actually still live in the area they wrote about. All three books are well researched, and they give you a picture of Lincoln as a young man and as a practicing attorney. Unfortunately, I do not believe many Lincoln collectors have these titles in their libraries. If you don’t, you will benefit in finding a copy of each (and no, I don’t have any for sale).
- William E. Bartlet – “THERE I GREW UP” REMEMBERING ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S INDIANA YOUTH
- Donald G. Richter – LINCOLN – TWENTY YEARS ON THE EASTERN PRAIRIE
- Guy C. Fraker – LINCOLN’S LADDER TO THE PRESIDENCY – THE EIGHTH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT
Recently, I have found several more publications about Lincoln written by local authors. After I have read them, I will post the author and the titles.
